“Paladining” (pronounced as pa-la-dee-ning)
That’s a word I have stolen from a paladin blog I have been reading since I started raiding in WOW (which means since Karazhan days since I only started playing in BC).
The word is coined by Ferraro, a famous Paladin blogger, which she refers to as the act of playing a good paladin with respect to the three trees namely Protection, Retribution, and Holy. In simple terms, it means you’re playing those 3 specs very well.
I feel most comfortable with playing Retribution of course because that’s the spec I leveled and raided with mostly. But since the advent of dual-speccing, I have gotten to learn the ropes of Pally healing and have every now and then dip into playing a tank too in Naxxramas raids before (back in 3.0) and in some dungeons. Paladining is a continuous progress though since every aspect of the tree depends on the changes made by developers in every patch or hot fix they implement, and the encounters they design. Therefore, I cannot with much bravado claim that I am an excellent Paladin because I know I still have a lot to learn. And learning how to play a class or a certain spec of that class takes time and a good chunk of effort I must add.
I have intimated this previously and I will say it again here, I have not been a good ret paladin before. Back when we were still leveling and doing heroic dungeons when we finally leveled to 70, I was a certified scrub. I did not know what was the right spec, the combat rotation, or proper gearing. Hence, I was at the bottom of the barrel in DPS meters and was being “outdpsed” by Weiland who was tanking. Then the officers started to plan for Karazhan raid and it finally hit me that I need to start playing well because I would then be entering a higher level of content.
So I visited the WOW paladin forums and read through hundreds and hundreds of pages that have anything to do with retribution paladin. In the process, I came to know paladin blogs that proved to be quite useful too which I still read up to now. It felt like doing a college research on a topic that I was really interested at. I was like a tabula rasa that was absorbing massive information. Then came our first Karazhan raid, and I could never ever forget that night because I managed to land myself on No. 2 of the DPS meter. Considering this was the BC era (way before the patch that buffed us) when there were much stigma and discrimination against Ret Pallies and we were considered “lolretadins”, I was extremely happy to pull it off. It was not a good time to be one but against the sweeping tide, I did it anyway. However, my point is not to brag on this matter. The thesis of all this wall of text is that a player can improve if you arm yourself with information. In the words of Ernie Baron, “Knowledge is Power”.
Maybe, you’re not much of a reader like me but there are various ways to acquire the know-how not just through reading (although reading admittedly is the best way for me). You can search the armory and check the spec of a known good player. You can harass a bit a famous player and ask for tips when he is online. I assure you; satisfaction will set in within you if you see yourself do better in the meters (Although posting the DPS/HPS/TPS meter when you’re number 1 is plain and simple bragging your epeen which one shouldn’t result to). Boasting aside, you can just revel to the fact that you are doing better than you were previously and you’re on your way to mastering if not one but three of your talent trees eventually. So, to my fellow Eraps, start now in paladining, or death knighting, or warrioring (I know it sounds ridiculous!), etcetera, etcetera. Master your main spec and start working on the rest. It’s really upon you to improve your play. Effort is required as there’d be no gain without pain.
To end, here are the blogs that I visit for my continuous learning:
http://ferarro.blogspot.com/ - I like this blog because you get the smorgasbord of anything about Paladin. The writers are all experts in their own spec and trees.
http://rhida.ch/ - I like this tankadin blog because I get to know the fights from a tank POV. Rhidach also offers tips and strategies on fights that are useful in general and not just to tanks. I dare say that this is a must read for all Pally tanks.
http://www.holypaladin.net/ - Simply has a lot of good stuff for holy paladins and getting the healer POV on fights.
http://elitistjerks.com/ - I refer to this site for more in-depth discussion on my most two played spec (ret and holy). Very chunky information can be found here and it’s worth combing through pages and pages of discussion if you want to excel at what you’re doing.
Feel free to share your resources here and help our other guild mates too!
PS: Your responses may merit special shinies! :D
